Ralph Lauren attended Baruch College as a Business major, but dropped out two years later. He did not attend fashion school, but he worked for Brooks Brothers as a salesperson. During that time, he created the Polo label of neckties. He later bought the name "Ralph Lauren" from Norman Hilton and began to oversee his fashion empire.
